Junior Division

Julia Isabella Angeles

Cello, Junior

Julia Isabella, 8 years old, began her musical studies on the cello at age 3. Her past and present cello teachers include Megan Lauterbach and Martine Benmann. She was the recipient of the first place award at the 34th Annual Music Festival in Honor of Confucius Youth Cello Division in 2019. She was one of the winners in the Yamaha National Junior Original Composers Competition in 2020 for her original composition for the cello and piano entitled "Artemis Sonata in D Minor." She also plays the piano, drums, and ukulele. In her spare time, she loves to read, write stories, cook with her dad, paint, and do Kung Fu.

Jonathan Faust

Piano, Junior

Jonathan (Jonny) Faust, Age 12, began piano at age 5.  He has received several gold and silver medals from the Sonata-Sonatina Festivals of Chicago Area Music Teachers Association and North Shore Music Teachers Associations since 2019.  Jonny performs regularly at the Merion Concert Series and is presently in the chamber music program at the Music Institute of Chicago where she studies with the Artist Faculty, Dr. Soo Young Lee. He also participated at Music Institute of Chicago's Intensive Piano Studies for past two summers.  Jonny loves challenging piano repertoire and has been learning various style of classic music during the pandermic period.  Jonny is also preparing to have his first piano solo recital this summer.  He also plays percussion at Northwood Junior High School Band.  He is a competitive swimmer at the Highland Park Aquatic Center. Jonny loves to read, bake, and have great conversations with "Siri!"

Bowen Gao

Piano, Junior

Bowen Gao is a 4th grader from Meadow Glen Elementary school in Naperville. He is a goofy kid in every regards. He loves making people laugh and is always very observant about things around him. He loves reading and can read for hours with no end. Another hobby of his is listening to video games songs with lyrics added by Man on the Internet.

Josephine Greeley

Cello, Junior

Josephine Greeley lives on the west side of Chicago with her parents, three older brothers, one dog, and two cats. She attends Chicago West Side Christian School and has been studying cello with Ms. Benmann for 4 years.

Zion Goh

Piano and Cello, Junior

Born in Singapore, Zion Goh, started his music journey from the age of 6 months old under the Suzuki Early Childhood program. He started to learn the piano and cello with his parents Dale & Yvette Goh. Since 2020, he has been studying piano with Dr Christina Tio and cello with Dr Alice O'Neil.

Vera Goryunov

Piano, Junior

Vera Goryunov, 8 years old, began her piano studies at age 5 with Ms. Irina Feoktistova and has been studying with Dr. Soo Young Lee since summer 2020. Vera also enjoys studying music theory with Dr. Daniel Baer at the Music Institute of Chicago. Vera received a First Prize at the 2020 International "Golden Classical Music Awards" Competition and an Honorary Mention at Beethoven With a View Young Artist Festival at age 7. She loves performing and welcomes opportunities to share the stage with other talented musicians. At age 7, Vera debuted at Carnegie Hall, New York performing Beethoven’s “Für Elise” to commemorate his 250th Birthday and was recently selected to participate in Steinway Master Class with renowned pianist Christopher O'Riley. During the Pandemic year, she prepared her new repertoire remotely and performed at the Merion Concert Series presented by Dr. Soo Young Lee's Studio. In her free time, Vera loves reading, doing math, and playing with her new puppy, Georgia.

Emily Hu

Piano, Junior

Emily Hu is an 11 year old that goes to the Joseph Sears School in Kenilworth, Illinois. Emily is taught by Christina Tio in the Music Institute of Chicago. She has gotten 2nd place in ISMTA in 2020 and 1st place in the Clara-Schumann international competition in 2019. She has also been awarded an Artists of Tomorrow Merit Scholarship for the 2020-2021 school year from the Music Institute of Chicago when she was 10. She started to learn piano when she was 4, and she also plays the violin as well.

Daniel Lim

Cello, Junior

Daniel Lim is 8 years old. He studies cello with Martine Benman.

 He states "I love cello sound and also like drawing and playing video games."

 

 

Jeremy Liu

Piano, Junior

Jeremy Liu, 9, is a fourth grader at Patterson Elementary School in Naperville. He is a student of Mrs. Sueanne Metz. Jeremy has won prizes in several local and international competitions including first place at the North Shore Piano Competition, Music Festival in Honor of Confucius Competition, (ISMTA) Illinois State Music Teachers Association Competition. He is the first place and best Korean Interpretation winner of the Sejong Music Competition for both 2018 and 2019.

As a winner of the American Protege Music Competition, Jeremy has performed at Carnegie Hall in December 2018. He was also the prize winner of the Chopin International Piano Competition in Hartford, CT. and the Chicago International Music Competition.

In 2020, Jeremy just won the First Prize in the Final Round of the Piano League Piano Star International Competition(Ages 12 and under of Professional Group). He is also the prize winner of Franz Liszt Center Piano Competition.

In addition to piano, Jeremy also enjoys swimming, tennis and skiing.
